Instant Ramen has always been a favorite of many households
regardless of race, ethnic group, or amount of income. But one thing is for
certain...I bet if you go into any African-American household you will almost
certainly find a pack of "noodles" in their house.
Growing up, I remember I would
always get excited about going to a cousin's house because my mom wouldn't buy
Instant Ramen for nothing!!! It was so irritating, I would always be like,
"Momma, why can't we eat noodles?" She would always respond back by
saying because "it's too much sodium and ya'll don't need to be eating
that." I would be so mad. Eventually though she gave in, but I'm pretty
sure it was only because things were tight at the time and you could buy a pack
of noodles for dumb cheap. It was the cup noodles though, and everyone knows
the cup noodles just don't be hitting the same like the ones that come in the
pack, but regardless I was still happy!
This week, I was at a friend's
house and while chit-chatting, she started making some ramen in the microwave.
It smelled so good, it was too hard for me to resist. I had to ask her for my
own cup of ramen. And yes, I'm sure you guessed it, this is what inspired me to
make this very post. I learned that apparently I've been making noodles wrong
my whole entire life! I don't know about you, but I always have made my noodles
in the microwave regardless if they are cup noodles or not. So, of course, I
went home and I made the noodles just how my friends told me. According to
them, it makes them taste way better.
Apparently it's all about how you
cook them and when you add the flavor packet. Rule number one that I had been
breaking is cooking them in the microwave and the second is that you have to
add the seasoning packets before the noodles and not after. I'm not gonna lie,
it didn't really make sense to me, but they swore that it would make them taste
10x better!
Everyone spruces up their noodles in their own way. Some people
put boiled eggs and various meats within their noodles, but I decided to keep
it simple this time around. I was told to use extra seasonings to give it a
little extra flavor. I went with some pepper, creole salt, and Lawry's. Before
you get to judging, I was very careful with the amount of seasoning I used. I
didn't want them tasting too salty! So I boiled my water first, added the
flavor packet to the water, and then placed the noodles within the water. I was
told to cook them for about 3-5 minutes depending on how I like my noodles, so
after three-ish minutes I took the noodles off high heat and added the
seasonings.
As far as
my final review, they honestly didn't taste any different to me. I don't know,
maybe I didn't use the right seasonings, but they tasted just the same as when
I put them in the microwave. Honestly, I'm probably going to continue to put
them in the microwave mainly due to the convenience. I eat noodles the majority
of the time simply because I don't feel like cooking.
