Trip to Sonoita Vineyards

Friday, July 10, 2020

OMG, its been so long since I have made a post... Life has been so hectic guys! I don't know why I decided to do this, but I am currently enrolled in three classes online and I still work 40hrs a week!!! I just haven't had the motivation to write a post, but what are excuses right? I have had so many people ask me when I was going to post new content, so here we are...

Last week, a couple friends and myself traveled to Sonoita, AZ for some wine tasting. One of my closest co-workers actually referred me to go, she was direct messaging me on Instagram the whole time she was there and was very tipsy, lol! I have been wine tasting once up in San Diego and I really enjoyed it, so I honestly couldn't pass up the opportunity to go again and get a little tipsy with some friends.

Sonoita is located in the southern part of Arizona, very very close to the Mexico border. It was about an hour-ish drive from Tucson, which isn't bad at all! I enjoyed the drive and the change of scenery. There were a lot of shrubs and hills which was a nice switch-up... ugh, it's so dry and flat in Tucson. I am from Tennessee so I am used to the hilly terrain and grass and trees so yeah... If you've ever lived in the desert or been then you catch my drift.

There are about 14 vineyards/ distillery's out in the area. Unfortunately, we only went to one and that partially may have been due to the fact that my friends are cheap, they'll probably think that was shady as hell, but oh well I tell them all the time haha! But regardless we still had a good time, I do plan on making another visit soon... Anyways we went to the Sonoita Vineyard and did 5 wine tastings for 15 bucks total which isn't bad at all, there was even a souvenir wine glass that was included with the tastings.

I really enjoy sweet wine, my friends included, so we all decided to taste all 5 of the sweet wines that they had. I am just now getting into the whole wine drinking thing and I was told that the older I get the more I would acquire the taste buds for the dry stuff. But if dry is your thing they had many options for that as well.

In my opinion, the sweet wines weren't really that sweet to me, but I did end up purchasing one. It was a white wine, named Sonora Blanca, it was my favorite out of the five total that we tried. I really wish we would've gone to more of the vineyards, but I will be going back for sure.

My co-worker did go to the Flying Leap and Kief-Joshua vineyards, they are also within the area. Her favorite out of the three that she went to was the Flying Leap vineyard. I think the pricing is a little different from Sonoita, but this vineyard also gives out souvenir glasses as well! The Flying Leap also has a separate wine tasting room that sells bourbon, which I think is definitely worth trying out. Overall we both agreed that the staff at the vineyards we visited were super sweet and informative during the tastings and we both can't wait to visit again.

Normally, I am always looking for a discount or hack when it comes to traveling and activities, but for this trip, I completely forgot to look on Groupon, smh... Nonetheless, I checked and low and behold there is a Groupon for the Sonoita Vineyards. It includes discounted prices for wine tastings for groups of 2+ and money towards the purchase of a wine bottle. So if you live in Tucson or are really into wine, I definitely recommend checking out some of these vineyards! They are open right now and honestly, there isn't a better time than now to go since many people aren't traveling due to COVID. We were the only people at the vineyard at the time, so that was definitely a plus!
